This is an intriguing claim, though, as I will suggest presently, not an unproblematic one. Roughly half of Utopian Spaces examines literary and cultural artifacts of the high modernist period, including some of its finest contributions—by David Trotter, John Hegglund, and Douglas Mao. Nevertheless, Victorianists will find much to engage them here. Daniel Cook contributes a nuanced investigation of H.
Utopian Spaces arose from a conference, and it is not entirely free of the weaknesses that often bedevil such collections: an unevenness in the strength of the contributions and a loose overarching structure. My quibbles notwithstanding, these titles confirm that nineteenth-century scholars interested in making the journey to utopia will find very good traveling companions.
